UNIQUE to the whole of pre-Christian Greek literature and to Paul himself, the phrase u[pakoh> pi<stewj, occurring in Rom 1:5 and 16:26, 1 gives voice to the design of the apostle’s missionary gospel. Within Romans itself the phrase is invested with a twofold significance. For one, against the backdrop of faith’s obedience in Jewish literature, these words assume a decidedly polemical thrust: the covenant fidelity of God’s ancient people (Israel) is now a possibility apart from assuming the identity of that people. Dunn then is right that the phrase neatly summarizes Paul’s apologetic in the Roman letter. THE investigation of the obedience of faith in Romans, commenced some three years ago, has thus far yielded two basic conclusions. (1) The phrase u[pakoh> pi<stewj (Rom 1:5; 16:26) embodies a twin idea: the obedience consisting in faith and the obedience arising out of faith. (2) Faith's obedience, defined in the first instance as perseverance, is the link between present justification by faith...

Because of its essentially two-sided character, it was suggested that the notion of...

In the following reflections on the understanding of truth in regard to Christian faith (or even in regard to religious faith, experience, and language in general), I advocate a relational interpretation of truth. Truth in that sense is understood not primarily as an intellectual assertion but as a qualification of a dynamic, existential, personal relation. Truth is the trustworthiness of that ...

Psychoanalysts since Sigmund Freud have tried to discuss the role of religion in modern societies. Freud himself saw religion as an illusion which had struck neurotics, while Slavoj Žižek viewed it as some sort of “perversion” which functioned in the cycle of law-transgression. In this essay, I dig into these theories to uncover traces of Lutheran interpretations of Paul’s words on the Jewish l...
